Question:
Does a person who travels 50 kilometers daily qualify to shorten (qasr) the prayers, or must they offer full prayers?
Answer by:
Shaykh Fahd Anṣārī (ḥafiẓahullāh)
Definition of Travel (Safar) in Sharīʿah:
- Anyone who travels beyond the city limits for approximately 50 kilometers or more is considered a musāfir (traveler) according to Sharīʿah.
- This applies even if the travel is frequent or daily.
Ruling on Qasr Prayer:
- Upon leaving the city limits, such a person is legally a traveler.
- Therefore, they are permitted to shorten (qasr) the four-unit prayers (e.g., Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, ʿIshā) to two rakʿāt.
- This remains valid even if the journey is part of their routine, such as for daily work or business.
Summary:
✔ Travels 50 km or more beyond the city → Musāfir
✔ Eligible to shorten prayers (qasr)
✔ Daily travel does not affect the ruling
