Punishment for Insulting the Prophet ﷺ

Narration from Al-Nasa’i – Reported by Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه):

A blind man lived during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He had a female slave with whom he had two sons. She used to frequently speak ill of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and curse him. He would rebuke her, but she would not desist. He would stop her, yet she would not refrain.

One night, she again mentioned the Prophet ﷺ and began to speak against him. I could no longer bear it. I took a pickaxe and struck her in the stomach, pressing down on her until she died. By morning, she was dead.

This matter was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, who gathered the people and said:
“I place Allah as a witness upon the one who has done this act and upon whom I have a right — let him stand.”
The blind man came forward, stumbling, and said:
“O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I am the one who did it. She was my slave. She used to treat me with affection and gentleness, and I had two sons from her, as precious as pearls. But she would frequently insult and curse you. I tried to stop her, but she would not stop. I rebuked her, but she did not desist. Last night, she again spoke against you, so I struck her in the stomach with a pickaxe until I killed her.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Bear witness, her blood is void (i.e., there is no retribution for her killing).”

✿ Important Points Derived from This Hadith:

Insulting the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or any other Prophet is a grave sin.
The punishment for insulting a Prophet is death — scholars are unanimous on this.

If the one who insults the Prophet sincerely repents, their life may be spared.

Pursuing and executing the blasphemer is a duty of the Islamic state,
and it is the responsibility of every Muslim to confront such individuals. May Allah have mercy on our leaders who show leniency in this matter and, at times, even hand over others to the blasphemers.

There is no Qisas (retribution) or Diyat (blood money) for killing the one who insults the Prophet.
The killer should not hide but openly explain the victim’s actions before a public gathering to serve as a lesson for others.

There is no value or compensation for the blood of the one who insults the Prophet ﷺ.
Regardless of their status — whether free, a slave, a contractual servant (mukatab), a slave promised freedom (mudabbar), or a concubine (umm walad) — the punishment remains death.
