❖ Question

Can the jinn affect human beings? If yes, then what are the prescribed Shar‘i ways to protect oneself from their harm?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Indeed, the jinn can affect and harm human beings. Their harm may take various forms:

◈ They can kill a human.
◈ They can throw stones at him.
◈ They can cause fear.
◈ They can inflict pain in other ways.

This is established both from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and from real-life occurrences.

◈ A Verified Incident – Evidence from the Sunnah

In one ḥadīth, during one of the battles (most likely the Battle of Khandaq), the Prophet ﷺ permitted a young companion, who had recently married, to return home.

  • When he reached home, he found his wife standing at the door, which displeased him. She invited him inside.
  • Upon entering, he saw a snake coiled on the bed. He struck it with his spear and killed it.
  • As soon as the snake died, that companion also passed away instantly. It was not clear which one had died first.

When the Prophet ﷺ was informed of this incident, he said:

“Do not kill the snakes found in houses, except the small-tailed snakes and those with two stripes on their backs (white and black), for they are harmful.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Badʾ al-Khalq, Ḥadīth 3311)

This ḥadīth is a clear proof that jinn can indeed harm human beings.

◈ Observational Evidence – Everyday Occurrences

  • At times when a person enters deserted places, stones may be thrown at him, though no human or animal is present.
  • Strange sounds or rustling leaves are sometimes heard in desolate places, causing fear.
  • Occasionally, a jinn may enter a human body:
    ◈ Out of love,
    ◈ Out of malice,
    ◈ Or for other reasons.

◈ Indication from the Qur’an

Allah says in Sūrah al-Baqarah:

﴿الَّذينَ يَأكُلونَ الرِّبوا۟ لا يَقومونَ إِلّا كَما يَقومُ الَّذى يَتَخَبَّطُهُ الشَّيطـنُ مِنَ المَسِّ﴾
(al-Baqarah: 275)

Translation:
“Those who consume usury will not stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except like the one beaten by Shayṭān into madness.”

This verse makes it clear that the jinn can influence humans to the extent of driving them into insanity.

◈ Speaking Through the Possessed

  • In such cases, jinn may speak from within the possessed person.
  • They may even converse with the one reciting ruqyah (incantation).
  • Sometimes the reciter extracts a promise from the jinn not to return.

Such incidents are widespread and have reached the level of tawātur (mass transmission), leaving no room for denial.

◈ Shar‘i Means of Protection from Jinn

The Sunnah prescribes certain adhkār (remembrances) and supplications for protection from jinn, including:

Recitation of Āyat al-Kursī

  • Reciting Āyat al-Kursī before going to sleep is a highly effective act.
  • The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person recites it at night:
◈ Allah appoints an angel to guard him.
◈ Shayṭān cannot come near him until morning.
