Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Modern Challenges: A Timeless Islamic Response

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Solutions to the Challenges of the Modern World
Written by: Muhammad Saleem

❖ The Objection

Some people raise questions such as:
❓ If the Prophet ﷺ were present in today's world, how would he preach?
❓ How would he solve modern issues?
❓ How would he eliminate interest-based systems, run a government, or confront global institutions like the United Nations?

Though these questions may appear innocent, they carry a subtle underlying accusation — suggesting that Islam (God forbid) is incompatible with the modern developed world. This idea is utterly baseless. Islam is a complete and eternal religion, sufficient for the guidance of humanity until the Day of Judgment.

❖ Prophethood and the Modern World

The finality of prophethood and the Qur'an being the last revealed Book prove that no matter how much the world advances, Islam remains sufficient for all times.
◈ Those who raise objections often associate prophets solely with ancient times, imagining a world of camels, swords, and arrows.
◈ In reality, the message and method of prophets always evolve in their delivery according to the needs of the time, but the essence of guidance remains constant.

❖ Islamic Guidance and Modern Technology

◈ If modern-day warfare technology has evolved, defensive systems too are adapted accordingly.
◈ During the era of Muhammad bin Qasim, Muslims invented the manjaniq (catapult) — an early form of the modern missile.
◈ Even today, many Muslim countries are equipped with advanced weaponry.
➤ For example, Pakistan is the only country in the world capable of manufacturing a specialized gun invented by Israel — with a bent barrel.
Turkey and Iran are also militarily advanced Muslim nations.

❖ Islamic State Facing Global Powers

◈ Just as global entities like the United Nations and major world powers influence Muslims today, during the Prophet’s ﷺ time, there were two global superpowers — Rome and Persia.
Rome was a Christian empire — much like today’s United States.
Persia was ruled by fire-worshippers — resembling today's atheistic or secular regimes.
◈ Muslims of that time also faced usury, poverty, and economic weakness, but under Islamic guidance, these challenges were successfully overcome.

❖ The Prophet’s ﷺ Exemplary Response

◈ When the Roman Emperor threatened the Prophet ﷺ to stop preaching Islam, he ﷺ responded by declaring that Muslims would not wait for Roman aggression — they would take the initiative themselves.
◈ At that time, Madinah's condition was even weaker than present-day Afghanistan, yet it was faith and trust in Allah that brought Muslims to victory.
◈ Today's Muslim rulers too require the same certainty and trust in Allah.

❖ The Misconception of Kufr’s Dominance and Muslim Weakness

◈ Some objectors believe that Kufr (disbelief) has become so dominant in this era that not even a prophet could stand against it.
◈ This is a complete fallacy. Even a common servant of Allah, with His help, can challenge the most powerful systems in the world.
◈ According to Allah’s promise, the time will come when Muslims will once again rise with strength, and through Jihad fi Sabilillah, they will defeat false and oppressive powers.

❖ Historical Proofs: Modern Defeats of Global Powers

◈ The defeat of the United States in Afghanistan is a well-known example.
◈ In Somalia, global military forces were rendered helpless, and had to seek help from countries like Pakistan just to secure their own survival.

✔ Conclusion

Islam is a religion that addresses the needs of every era. No matter how far mankind advances, success is not possible without practicing the religion and principles of Allah.
To believe that Islam is incapable of solving modern problems is a misguided notion.
When Allah wills, Muslims will rise again with their true strength and eliminate false systems across the world.
