When Was the Prophet ﷺ Made Khātam al-Nabiyyīn?

Question:
When was the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made Khātam al-Nabiyyīn (Seal of the Prophets)?
Answer:
Allah had decreed the Prophet ﷺ as Khātam al-Nabiyyīn even before the creation of Adam عليه السلام.
This ḥadīth was graded ṣaḥīḥ by Imām Ibn Ḥibbān (6404), Imām al-Ḥākim (2/418), and authenticated by Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī.
As for the narration explicitly stating that the Prophet ﷺ’s prophethood was written down, it is weak and mursal.

- ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
إني عند الله لخاتم النبيين، وإن آدم عليه السلام لمنجدل فى طينته، وسأنبئكم بأول ذلك دعوة أبى إبراهيم، وبشارة عيسى بي، ورؤيا أمي التى رأت، وكذلك أمهات النبيين ترين.
“I was, with Allah, written as the Seal of the Prophets, while Adam عليه السلام was still being shaped in his clay. I will tell you about the beginning of this: it was my father Ibrāhīm’s supplication, ʿĪsā’s glad tidings about me, and my mother’s dream which she saw, as the mothers of the prophets often see.”
(Musnad Aḥmad 4/127; al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr al-Bukhārī 6/68 – chain ḥasan)

- Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī رحمه الله (458H) explained:
إنما أراد والله أعلم أنه كذلك فى قضاء الله وتقديره قبل أن يكون آدم عليه السلام.
“What is meant — and Allah knows best — is that the Prophet ﷺ was written as such in Allah’s decree and preordainment before Adam عليه السلام came into existence.”
(Shuʿab al-Īmān 2/510, ḥadīth 1322)
