Question

Some people bury worn-out (shaheed) pages of the Noble Qur’an, while others throw them into wells, rivers, etc. Is this permissible? Please explain in the light of the Qur’an and ḥadīth.

Answer

Whether the pages are worn-out pages of the Noble Qur’an or of any other religious book, they should be preserved in a suitable manner so that disrespect does not occur.

They may be buried to preserve them. Likewise, they may also be burned and turned into ashes, as is established regarding ʿUthmān رضي الله عنه in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (4987).

In short, any possible method should be adopted by which these pages are protected from disrespect.

Nowadays, many people throw such pages into rivers, which contains several problems. For example, sewage water flows into the Ravi River, and it often remains dry. Placing these sacred pages into water mixed with urine and feces constitutes disrespect, and this must be avoided.

Moreover, canals are drawn from rivers to irrigate many areas, and these pages may flow with that water into fields, where there is a danger of them being trampled underfoot.

Therefore, the best method is to dig a deep pit and bury them in the ground, or to burn them and eliminate their physical form, thereby safeguarding them from any form of disrespect.
