❀ The Question

① Was “صلى الله عليه وسلم” ever recited before the Prophet ﷺ, or did he command it?
② Can one say “عليه الصلاة والسلام” instead?

❀ The Answer

Alhamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasoolillah, amma ba‘d!

✿ 1. Reciting “صلى الله عليه وسلم” in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ

In Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Iman, Bab Nuzul ‘Isa ibn Maryam, it is recorded that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself recited the words “صلى الله عليه وسلم.”

Moreover, all books of hadith indicate that the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) also used to say “صلى الله عليه وسلم” during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ.

This is sufficient for establishing a taqreeri hadith—since the Companions said it in his presence, and the Prophet ﷺ did not object.

✿ 2. Saying “عليه الصلاة والسلام”

As for these specific words, I do not know of any narration where they are reported.

ھذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب
(This is what I hold, and Allah knows best what is correct.)
