Prohibitions and Rulings Regarding Janabah and Ghusl

Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

1. Prohibition of Prayer

A person in janabah is not permitted to perform any type of prayer — whether obligatory (fard), voluntary (nafl), or funeral prayer — until ghusl is performed.

Qur’anic Evidence:

﴿وَإِن كُنتُم جُنُبًا فَاطَّهَّروا﴾
"And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves."
[Al-Ma’idah: 6]

2. Prohibition of Tawaf of the Ka‘bah

Performing tawaf in a state of janabah is forbidden, as tawaf is akin to remaining in a mosque for worship.

Qur’anic Evidence:

﴿وَلا جُنُبًا إِلّا عابِرى سَبيلٍ حَتّى تَغتَسِلوا﴾
"Nor be in a state of janabah, except when passing through (the mosque), until you have bathed."
[An-Nisa: 43]

3. Prohibition of Touching the Qur’an

A junub person may not touch the Mus-haf.

Hadith Evidence:

«لَا يَمَسَّ الْقُرْآنَ إِلَّا طَاهِرٌ»
"Only a pure person should touch the Qur’an."
[Darimi, Kitab al-Talaq, Bab La Talaq Qabl al-Nikah, Hadith: 2266]

4. Prohibition of Staying in the Mosque Without Wudu

Remaining in a mosque while in a state of janabah is prohibited, unless passing through or after performing wudu.

Qur’anic Evidence:

﴿وَلا جُنُبًا إِلّا عابِرى سَبيلٍ حَتّى تَغتَسِلوا﴾
[An-Nisa: 43]

5. Prohibition of Reciting the Qur’an

Recitation of the Qur’an in a state of janabah is also prohibited until ghusl is performed. The Prophet ﷺ used to teach Qur’an to the Companions on the condition that they were not in janabah.
