Wine Drinking – Islamic Teachings and Severe Warnings

Every Intoxicant Is Wine and Prohibited

  • Ibn Umar (RA): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Every intoxicant is wine, and every wine is forbidden. Whoever drinks wine in this world and dies without repentance will be deprived of it in the Hereafter.”
    (Bukhari 5575, Muslim 2003)

The Punishment of Teenat al-Khabal

  • Jabir (RA): The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah has promised to make those who drink intoxicants drink Teenat al-Khabal.”
He was asked: What is Teenat al-Khabal?
He replied: “The sweat of the inhabitants of Hell, or the discharge from their bodies (blood, pus, etc.).”
    (Muslim 2002)

Prayers Rejected Due to Intoxication

  • Ibn Umar (RA): The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever drinks wine and becomes intoxicated, Allah will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he dies in that state, he will enter the Fire. But if he repents, Allah accepts his repentance.”
    (Ibn Majah 3377, Nasa’i 5670)

Complete Curse Related to Wine

  • Ibn Umar (RA): The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, and the one who consumes its price.”
    (Abu Dawud 3674)

Other Intoxicants Are Also Forbidden

Since every intoxicant is wine, the following are also haram:

Clear Instructions from the Qur’an

يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ ۖ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ (البقرہ 219)

“They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin.”

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالْأَنصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ... (المائدہ 90-91)

“O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, stone alters, and divining arrows are abominations of Satan’s work, so avoid them that you may be successful. Satan only wishes to create enmity and hatred between you through wine and gambling and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?”

Any form of betting where money is staked on results is also gambling, such as:

  • “If this happens, you give me this much money.”

This too is strictly haram.

They will never enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance.”
