Prohibition of Wearing Rings on the Index and Middle Fingers

Wearing a Ring on the Index and Middle Finger

✍ Written by: Imran Ayoob Lahori

Wearing a ring on the index finger (angusht-e-shahādat) and the middle finger is not permissible, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade it.

Hadith of ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه)

He said:

نهانى أن أضع الخاتم فى هذه أو فى هذه للسبابة والوسطي
“The Prophet ﷺ forbade me from wearing a ring on this (index finger) and this (middle finger).”
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 3556; Abū Dāwūd: 4225; Tirmidhi: 1786; Ibn Mājah: 3648]

📌 Conclusion:

  • It is forbidden to wear a ring on the index and middle fingers.
  • The Sunnah is to wear it on the little finger (pinky).
