Islamic Ruling on Taking Photos and Videos During Burial
❖ Question:
What is the ruling on taking photos or videos during the burial of the deceased, especially when such videos of well-known scholars are also seen?
❖ Answer by: Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir ḥafiẓahullāh
◈ Whether at the time of burial or on any other occasion, Islamic law clearly prohibits the capturing of images or videos of beings with a soul, and this ruling remains applicable.
◈ Taking photographs or videos—whether of the living or the deceased—is impermissible, as the prohibition and condemnation of image-making are well-established in the Sharīʿah.
◈ Muslims must refrain from this temptation, and occasions such as burial should be devoted solely to worship and supplication, rather than wasting time on making videos.
✔ Taking photographs or videos during burial is ḥarām (prohibited) and must be avoided, whether the deceased is a common individual or a well-known scholar.
