❖ Question:

What is the ruling on marrying a maternal aunt and her niece at the same time?

✿ Answer:

It is not permissible to combine a maternal aunt (khālah) and her niece (bhanjī) in marriage simultaneously.

Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

لَا يُجْمَعُ بَيْنَ الْمَرْأَةِ وَعَمَّتِهَا وَلَا بَيْنَ الْمَرْأَةِ وَخَالَتِهَا

📚 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5109, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1408

“A woman and her paternal aunt must not be joined in marriage, nor a woman and her maternal aunt.”

He further narrated:

The Prophet ﷺ forbade marrying a niece while her aunt is present in marriage, and likewise forbade marrying an aunt while her niece is in marriage.
One should not marry a woman with a closer or higher relational status when the other is already present in wedlock — whether senior or junior.

📚 Musnad Aḥmad: 2/426; Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 2065; Sunan al-Nasā’ī; Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 1126 – Chain is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ).
