Prohibition of Making Graves a Place of Recurring Gatherings

✿ Prohibition of Turning Graves into an Eid (Celebration Spot) ✿
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ The Instruction of the Prophet ﷺ

Narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"لَا تَجْعَلُوا قَبْرِي عِيدًا"
“Do not make my grave an Eid.”
Reference: Ḥasan – Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, p. 280;
Abū Dāwūd: 2042, Kitāb al-Manāsik: Bāb Ziyārat al-Qubūr;
Musnad Aḥmad: 2/367

❖ Explanation of “Eid” in the Hadith

Here, “Eid” does not refer only to Islamic festivals, but to:

➤ Fixing specific times,
➤ Regularly attending the grave for rituals, supplications, or gatherings,
➤ Turning the grave into a recurring place of religious visitation, similar to how people gather in Eid celebrations.

❖ The View of Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah states:

"The focal point of this hadith is that even though the Prophet’s ﷺ grave is the most virtuous grave on earth,
he still forbade making it an Eid. So, it is even more strongly forbidden to turn the grave of any other person into an Eid.”

Reference: Iqtidhāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm, p. 155

❖ Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله

Shaykh al-Albānī writes:

"This hadith is a clear evidence that making the graves of Prophets and righteous people into Eids is ḥarām (prohibited).”
Reference: Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, p. 281

❖ Conclusion

✅ The practice of visiting graves regularly in fixed seasons, days, or making it a place of habitual ritual gatherings is prohibited.
✅ The Prophet ﷺ himself forbade this for his own grave — indicating greater severity if such treatment is given to other graves.
✅ This ruling aims to protect Tawḥīd and prevent the exaggeration of reverence that may lead to shirk (associating partners with Allah).
