Prohibition of Intercourse Before Ghusl after Menstruation

Authored by: Imran Ayub Lahori
Is it permissible to have intercourse with a wife before she performs Ghusl after her period ends?
Answer:

➊ Allah Almighty says:

“They ask you about menstruation. Say, ‘It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they become pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you.’”
[Al-Baqarah: 222]
➋ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضی اللہ عنہ that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:

『ومن أتى حائضا أو امرأة فى دبرها أو كاهنا فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد』

“Whoever has intercourse with a menstruating woman, or with a woman in her back passage, or goes to a soothsayer and believes him, has indeed disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم.”
[Sahih: Sahih Tirmidhi 116, Book of Purification: Chapter on the Prohibition of Intercourse with a Menstruating Woman; Tirmidhi 135; Ahmad 2/408; Abu Dawood 3904; Ibn Majah 639; Darimi 1/259]
➌ Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik رضی اللہ عنہ narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said regarding menstruating women:

『اصنعوا كل شيئ إلا النكاح』

“Do everything with her except intercourse.”
[Muslim 302, Book of Menstruation: Chapter on Permissibility of the Menstruating Woman Washing Her Husband’s Head and Combing His Hair; Ahmad 3/132; Darimi 1/245; Abu Dawood 258; Tirmidhi 2977; Nasa’i 1/187; Ibn Majah 644; Bayhaqi 1/313; Ibn Hibban 1352; Abu Awanah 1/311]
Consensus:
There is consensus that it is prohibited to have intercourse with a menstruating woman.
[Nayl al-Awtar 1/404]
Shaykh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Aal Shaykh
also issued a fatwa in accordance with this ruling.
