The Ruling on Wearing a Gold Ring in Islam
Source: Fatawa Ameenpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri
❖ Question
What is the ruling on wearing a gold ring?
❖ Answer
Gold is haram for men of the Ummah, but permissible for women.
- For men, wearing a ring is permissible in itself, but a gold ring is not allowed.
- Women, however, are allowed to wear gold rings.
❀ ʿAllamah Ibn al-ʿArabi (رحمه الله, 543H) and Hafiz al-Nawawi (رحمه الله, 676H) said:
أجمع المسلمون على إباحة خاتم الذهب للنساء وأجمعوا على تحريمه على الرجال.
“The Muslims are unanimous on the permissibility of a gold ring for women, and they are unanimous on its prohibition for men.”
(Al-Masalik fi Sharh Muwatta Malik, 7/430; Sharh al-Nawawi, 14/65)
Therefore, the practice of giving a gold ring to the groom at engagement or marriage is not permissible, and it is an imitation of non-Muslims, not a tradition of Muslims.
