Prohibition of giving charity of worthless and inferior items and of donating all property as charity

This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Hussain bin Mubarak Al-Mosuli's Arabic book Al-Awamer wal-Nawahi, which was translated into Urdu by Muhammad Sarwar Gohar under the title Ahkamat o Mamnoaat.

Prohibition of Giving Trash and Inferior Items as Charity

① Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to the mosque and saw that one of us had hung a bunch of spoiled and discarded dates (as charity). The Prophet (peace be upon him) began to criticize this bunch and said:
لوشاء رب هذه الصدقة تصدق بأطيب من هذا ، إن رب هذه الصدقة يأكل حشفا يوم القيامة
"If the owner of this charity wished, he could have given better charity. The owner of this charity will eat spoiled and inferior dates on the Day of Resurrection."

Prohibition of Giving All Property as Charity

① Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه narrates, we were present in the presence of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم when a man came carrying a golden egg and said: O Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! I found this thing in a mine. Please accept it, for it is charity; I have nothing else besides this. The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم turned away from him, but he came again from your right side and said the same. The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم again turned away from him, then he came from your left side and said the same. You again turned away from him, then he came from behind you. Then you caught it and threw it towards him; if it had hit him, it would have injured him. Then the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
يأتى أحدكم بجميع ما يملك فيقول: هذه صدقة. ثم يقعد يستكف الناس. خير الصدقة ما كان عن ظهر غنى
"None of you brings all his wealth and says this is charity, then sits asking people for more. The best charity is that which is given after becoming wealthy and secure."
