Ḥaḍrat ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
«لا يحل سلف و بيع»
“It is not permissible to combine a loan and a sale (in one transaction).”
[Ṣaḥīḥ: al-Ṣaḥīḥah: 1212; Abū Dāwūd: 3504, Kitāb al-Buyūʿ: Bāb fī al-rajul yabīʿ mā laysa ʿindahu; al-Tirmidhī: 1234]
Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ رحمه الله explains that the term “salaf” is used for both bayʿ al-salam and for a loan.
[Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī: 4/493]
Imām al-Baghawī رحمه الله explains: An example is when someone says, “I will sell you this slave for one thousand cash, but if payment is delayed, it will be two thousand.” This is one sale containing two conditions.
