Prohibition of Buying and Selling Dogs in Islamic Law

❖ Islamic Ruling on Buying and Selling Dogs ❖

Buying and Selling of Specific Types of Dogs

The buying and selling of dogs is impermissible in Islam, and their price is unlawful—whether the dog is used for protection, hunting, or any other purpose. This prohibition is based on the narration of Abū Mas‘ūd ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr (رضي الله عنه) who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The price of a dog, the earnings of a prostitute, and the payment given to a soothsayer have all been forbidden.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 2237; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1567/39]

[Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Ifta: Fatwa No. 6554]
