It Is Not Permissible to Engage in Intercourse Through the Woman's Back Passage
✍ Authored by: Imran Ayub Lahori
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Malʿūn (accursed) is the one who has intercourse with a woman in her back passage."
[Hasan: Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd: 1894, Kitāb al-Nikāḥ: Chapter on Intercourse; also in Abū Dāwūd: 2162, Ibn Mājah: 1923]
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever has intercourse with a woman in her back passage has indeed disassociated himself from what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ."
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd: 3304, Kitāb al-Ṭibb; Abū Dāwūd: 3904; Aḥmad: 2/308; Tirmidhī: 135; Ibn Mājah: 639]
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Do not approach women through their back passages."
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl: 2005; Ibn Mājah: 1924; Aḥmad: 5/213; Ṭabarānī al-Kabīr: 3734; Bayhaqī: 5/23]
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Indeed, Allah will not look mercifully at the man who has intercourse with his wife through her back passage."
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd: 1878; Ibn Mājah: 1923; Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Mājah: 1560]
◈ The majority of scholars (jumhūr) have declared intercourse through the back passage as ḥarām (forbidden).
[Nayl al-Awṭār: 4/290]
◈ Scholars are unanimously agreed that a man may approach his wife from behind or from any angle, as long as it is through the front passage (farj).
[Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī: 3/91]
Narrated that ʿUmar (RA) said to the Prophet ﷺ, “O Messenger of Allah, I am ruined!”
The Prophet ﷺ asked: “What ruined you?”
He said, “Last night, I turned my mount (i.e., changed the usual position in intercourse).”
The Prophet ﷺ remained silent until Allah revealed:
﴿نِسَاؤُكُمْ حَرْثٌ لَكُمْ۪ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَكُمْ أَنَّىٰ شِئْتُمْ﴾
"Your wives are a tilth for you, so approach your tilth as you wish..."
[Surah al-Baqarah: 223]
Explanation:
This verse permits approaching from in front or behind, or from the side — but only into the vaginal passage, not the anal passage.
[Ṣaḥīḥ: al-Taʿlīqāt al-Raḍiyyah 2/230; Tirmidhī: 2980; Musnad Aḥmad: 189]
Jews believed that approaching a woman from behind (even into the vagina) causes the child to be cross-eyed.
To refute this false belief, Allah revealed:
"Your wives are a tilth for you..."
[Bukhārī: 4528; Muslim: 1435; Abū Dāwūd: 2163; Tirmidhī: 2978; Ibn Mājah: 1925; Dārimī: 2/145; Ibn Ḥibbān: 4166; Bayhaqī: 7/194]
◈ It is permissible to approach the wife from any angle — front, back, or sideways — as long as the intercourse remains within the vagina.
◈ Engaging in anal intercourse is strictly ḥarām (prohibited) and cursed in the Sharīʿah.
