Can we use the incident of the race between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Lady ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها as a basis to declare recreational play as permissible for women?
This race between the Prophet ﷺ and Sayyidah ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها took place in a specific location, and it appears to have occurred at night when people were asleep. It likely happened near the mosque, in its vicinity, or on the outskirts of the city.
The objective seems to have been to promote good marital companionship and to strengthen love and affection between husband and wife.
Therefore, this incident can only be used as a basis for similar situations—that is, a private race between husband and wife.
It is permissible for a husband to engage in such recreational activity with his wife, provided that it is done privately, away from public attention and free from any potential fitnah (temptation or harm).
As for open public competitions—such as races, wrestling, and similar sports—this incident does not provide evidence for their permissibility for women. Such activities should be confined to the privacy of the marital relationship only.
And Allah knows best.
