Principles for the Guardian to Protect and Grow the Orphan’s Wealth

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi (رحمه الله)

Growing the Orphan’s Wealth by the Guardian

If the guardian is experienced in business and invests the orphan’s wealth for improvement without misusing it for his own benefit, he is not liable for any loss that may occur. However, the guardian should not leave the orphan’s wealth idle and stagnant; rather, he should invest it and ensure its growth, lest zakah gradually deplete it.
Regarding zakah, if the orphan’s wealth reaches the nisab and a year passes over it, zakah becomes obligatory and the guardian must pay it. If the orphan’s wealth generates a profit and the principal amount reaches the nisab, the year for the profit will be calculated from the year of the principal amount.
