Question:
In Musnad Abi Dawud Tayalisi, Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your deeds are presented to your relatives and close ones in their graves. If the deeds are good, they become happy, and if there are any unrighteous deeds, they say:
'O Allah, grant them the ability to perform acts of obedience to You.'" [Musnad Abi Dawud Tayalisi 1903, Musnad Ahmad 3/165]. Is this narration authentic, and are our deeds truly presented to our relatives in their graves?
Answer:
The above-mentioned narration is not authentic; it is extremely weak. In its chain of transmission, the narrator Silt bin Dinār has been declared weak and abandoned by Imam Ahmad, Imam Yahya ibn Ma'in, Imam Abdulrahman ibn Mahdi, Imam Bukhari, Imam Jawzjani, Imam Darqutni, Imam Nasa'i, and others. None of the hadith scholars have authenticated him.
[Mizan al-I'tidal: 1/318]
Similarly, in the chain of transmission, there is the issue of Tadlees by the narrator Hassan, so this narration cannot be considered accurate in any way that suggests all our deeds are presented.
