Question
If, due to extreme necessity or a valid Sharʿī excuse (other than travel), two prayers are combined while in residence, is it necessary to also perform the Sunnah prayers of both? (From a female questioner)
Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:
If two prayers are combined in the state of ḥaḍar (residence), not due to travel but due to extreme necessity or a valid Sharʿī reason, only the obligatory (farḍ) prayers should be performed. Performing the Sunnah prayers in such a case is not necessary.
Evidence
This is supported by the narration in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb Mawāqīt al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Taʾkhīr al-Ẓuhr ilā al-ʿAṣr, Hadith no. 543.

- In residence, if combining prayers due to valid necessity, one should suffice with the obligatory prayers.
- Sunnah prayers may be omitted in this special situation.
