Obligatory Prayer While on a Conveyance

Prayer may be performed on a ship or boat.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about offering prayer on a boat, so he ﷺ said:

صلِّ فيها قائمًا إلا أن تخاف الغرق

“Offer prayer on it while standing, unless you fear drowning.”

Reference: al-Mustadrak ʿalā al-Ḥākim: 1/275, Ḥadīth: 1019

Based on analogy from the above ḥadīth, scholars have permitted offering prayer on airplanes, trains, and similar means of transport.

Reference: al-Fiqh ʿalā al-Madhāhib al-Arbaʿah: 1/206

Before beginning the prayer, one should determine the direction of the qiblah.
(Details may be referred to in the chapter on the Qiblah)
