❀ Question

When the name of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was mentioned in the presence of the Companions (RA) while he ﷺ was not present, did they act upon the Qur’anic command ﴿صَلُّوْا عَلَیْہِ وَسَلِّمُوْا تَسْلِیْمًا﴾ by reciting specific words?

❀ Answer

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

When the name of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was mentioned before the Companions (RA), even in his absence, they would say:

“Ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam.”

This practice is abundantly found in the books of Ḥadīth. From this, it is clear that the Companions (RA) maintained the habit of invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ whenever his name was mentioned.

❀ Meaning of the Qur’anic Verse

Regarding the command of Allah:

﴿صَلُّوْا عَلَیْہِ وَسَلِّمُوْا تَسْلِیْمًا﴾

Some people understood this to mean that whenever the name of the Prophet ﷺ is heard or mentioned, one must immediately recite Durūd and Salām.

In reality, however, this verse does not specifically command that Durūd be recited each time his name is mentioned. Rather, it issues a general command to send blessings and salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ.

❀ Conclusion

❀ The Companions (RA), upon hearing the name of the Messenger ﷺ, would recite “Ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam.”

❀ However, interpreting the verse of Durūd to mean that one must recite it every single time the Prophet’s ﷺ name is mentioned is not correct.
