Pharaoh’s Chiefs Accusing Musa (AS) of Being a Skilled Sorcerer

Authored by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

❖ Question:

What did the chiefs of Pharaoh’s people say about Musa (AS)?

❖ Answer:

Allah ﷻ says:

﴿قَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَسَاحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴾ [الأعراف: 109]
"The chiefs of the people of Pharaoh said: ‘Indeed, this is a skilled sorcerer.’"

That is, the chiefs spoke — the notables and leaders of Pharaoh’s people who supported his statement. When Pharaoh had settled back upon his throne and his panic subsided, the chiefs surrounding him said: “Indeed, he is a sorcerer skilled in his craft.”

They thus agreed with him and consulted among themselves about what to do regarding Musa (AS), how to extinguish the light he had brought, how to invalidate his message, and how to portray him as a liar and fabricator.

At the same time, they expressed fear that the people might accept Musa’s call because of what they perceived as sorcery, and if the people followed Musa (AS), he would gain ascendancy over them, and eventually exile them.

Thus, they busied themselves with such schemes and discussions.
