Permissibility of Using Utensils with Small Amounts of Silver

Author: Imran Ayyub Lahori

The use of utensils with a small amount of silver is permissible in Islam, as it does not involve any element of arrogance or pride typically associated with luxury utensils.

Evidence from Hadith

Narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī:

"أَنَّ قَدَحَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ انْكَسَرَ فَاتَّخَذَ مَكَانَ الشَّعْبِ سِلْسِلَةً مِنْ فِضَّةٍ"
"The cup of the Prophet ﷺ broke, so he had it repaired by fixing a silver chain at the cracked part."
(Bukhārī 3109, Kitāb Farḍ al-Khums, Bāb Mā Dhukira min Dirʿ al-Nabī ﷺ wa ʿAṣāhu wa Sayfihi wa Qadaḥihi wa Khātamihi)

Key Point

  • A small amount of silver for repairing or reinforcing an item is allowed.
  • The prohibition relates to utensils made entirely of gold or silver for the purpose of pride or ostentation, which is not the case here.

Conclusion:
Using utensils with minor silver adornment or repair is permissible, as established by the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
