Permissibility of Making Nabidh in All Containers if Free from Intoxication

Author: Imran Ayoob Lahori

Making Nabidh in All Containers is Permissible

Hadith Evidence
Hadhrat Buraydah (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"كنت نهيتكم عن الأشربة إلا فى ظروف الأدم فاشربوا فى كل وعاء غير أن لا تشربوا مسكرا"
"I had previously forbidden you from drinking anything except in leather containers, but now you may drink from any container, provided it does not cause intoxication."
[Muslim: 977, Ahmad: 350/5, Abu Dawood: 3698, Nasai: 310/8, Ibn Majah: 3405]

This Hadith clearly indicates that the earlier restriction on certain containers has been lifted, and now Nabidh (a drink made from dates, raisins, or similar items soaked in water) can be prepared in any type of container as long as it does not become intoxicating.

Earlier Prohibition

This narration abrogates the following Hadith:

Hadhrat A’ishah (RA) said:
When the delegation of ‘Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and inquired about Nabidh, he forbade them from making it in certain types of containers:

"الدباء ، والنقير ، والمزفت ، والحنتم"
"Gourds (dubbā’), hollowed-out palm trunks (naqīr), pitch-coated jars (muzafatt), and old green jars (hanṭam)."
[Muslim: 1995, Bukhari: 5595, Ahmad: 131/6, Nasai: 307/8]

Reason for the Earlier Prohibition

These containers were prohibited because intoxication would occur more quickly and strongly in them. Once the danger of intoxication was explicitly addressed, the restriction on the type of container was lifted.

✅ Conclusion:
Nabidh can be made in any type of container, as long as it has not fermented to the point of intoxication. The condition is clear — any intoxicating drink remains prohibited regardless of the container used.
