Permissibility of Eating Carrion in Cases of Extreme Necessity

Carrion is Permissible for a Person in Necessity

Written by:
Imran Ayub Lahori

When a person is in extreme necessity, even carrion becomes permissible for him.

Evidences

Qur’anic Evidence – Al-Baqarah: 173

"But if one is compelled by necessity, neither desiring it nor transgressing its limit, then there is no sin upon him."

Qur’anic Evidence – Al-Mā’idah: 3

"But if one is compelled by extreme hunger with no inclination to sin, then indeed Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."

Fiqh Principle

"Necessities make prohibited things permissible."
[Al-Manshūr by al-Zarkashī: 2/317]

Conclusion: In situations of genuine necessity — such as life-threatening hunger — consuming otherwise prohibited items like carrion becomes permissible, provided the person does not transgress limits or seek it without need.
