❖ Question

Is it permissible, in order to avoid the birth of too many children, to use some other means (such as a condom or any other contraceptive method) during intercourse with one’s wife?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu waṣ-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

From the Ahadith Mubarakah, it is understood that if the objective is to prevent excessive offspring, then ʿazl (i.e., withdrawal before ejaculation) has been permitted. In this regard, clear evidences exist.

However, apart from ʿazl, the use of any other method or contraceptive (such as condoms, birth control pills, or other means) is not explicitly mentioned nor permitted in the Qur’an or Sunnah. Therefore, the use of such methods is not in accordance with Shariʿah, since no proof is found for them either in the Qur’an or in the Ahadith Mubarakah.
