✿ Ḥadīth 249: Permission to Spend Nights in Makkah Due to Service to Ḥajj Pilgrims

Arabic Text:
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ:
{ اسْتَأْذَنَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَنْ يَبِيتَ بِمَكَّةَ لَيَالِيَ مِنًى ، مِنْ أَجْلِ سِقَايَتِهِ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ }

Translation:
Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما reports that ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib رضي الله عنه sought permission from the Prophet ﷺ to stay in Makkah during the nights of Minā due to his responsibility of providing water to the pilgrims. The Prophet ﷺ granted him permission.

✦ Explanation of Terms:

  • Siqāyah: The responsibility of serving water to the ḥujjāj (pilgrims).

✦ Commentary:

This ḥadīth implies that the permission granted to ʿAbbās رضي الله عنه was due to a specific cause—his duty of serving water to pilgrims. Therefore, if that cause does not exist, such permission does not apply to others.

✿ Ḥadīth 250: Combining Maghrib and ʿIshā at Muzdalifah

Arabic Text:
عَنْهُ – أَيْ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ – قَالَ:
{ جَمَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ بِجَمْعٍ ، لِكُلِّ وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْهُمَا إقَامَةٌ . وَلَمْ يُسَبِّحْ بَيْنَهُمَا ، وَلَا عَلَى إثْرِ وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْهُمَا }

Translation:
Sayyidunā Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrates that the Prophet ﷺ performed Maghrib and ʿIshā prayers together at Jamʿ (i.e., Muzdalifah). A separate iqāmah was called for each prayer, and he ﷺ neither offered any optional prayer between them nor after either of them.

✦ Explanation of Terms:

  • Jamʿ: Refers to Muzdalifah.
  • Lam yusabbiḥ: He ﷺ did not perform optional (nafl) prayers. (Negative past verb in the known active voice from the Tafʿīl pattern)

✦ Commentary:

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله mentions that Imām Ibn al-Mundhir رحمه الله reported a consensus (ijmāʿ) on not performing any nafl prayers between these two combined prayers.
