Ruling on Performing Ghusl Due to Janābah During Menstruation
✍ Fatwa by: Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh
If a woman experiences a nocturnal emission (iḥtilām) while in the state of menstruation (ḥayḍ), is she required to perform ghusl immediately, or should she wait until her menses end and then perform a single ghusl for both janābah and menstruation?
In such a case, there is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding whether ghusl is required during menstruation due to janābah. The issue has two main scholarly viewpoints:
◈ The woman may perform ghusl specifically to remove the state of janābah.
◈ After this ghusl, she is permitted to:
— Engage in Qur'an recitation (according to the view allowing it during menstruation in the absence of janābah),
— Perform adhkār (remembrances) and duʿās (supplications).
◈ This opinion emphasizes cleanliness and spiritual purification, despite the ongoing menstruation.
◈ This view holds that since the woman is already in a state of ḥayḍ, performing ghusl for janābah serves no immediate practical benefit.
◈ Therefore, she should not be burdened with the extra effort of performing ghusl.
◈ She can delay it and perform a single ghusl after her menstruation ends, fulfilling both requirements.
Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir حفظه الله states:
✔ It is preferable for the woman to perform ghusl for janābah even during menstruation,
✔ As it brings cleanliness (naẓāfah) and a state of partial purification.
✔ However, she remains a ḥāʾiḍah (menstruating woman), and thus, only the janābah is removed, not the menstruation.
✔ Performing ghusl for janābah during menstruation is not obligatory, but recommended for cleanliness and spiritual upliftment.
✔ The woman will still have to perform ghusl after her menstruation ends to regain complete purity.
