Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh Ibn Baz (رحمه الله)
Question:
Can my husband pay my zakat on my behalf, given that the money is from my husband's earnings? Also, can I give zakat to my orphaned and young nephew who is considering marriage?
Answer:
If your wealth, whether in gold, silver, or other zakatable assets, has reached the nisab (the minimum threshold for zakat) or more, then it is obligatory upon you to pay zakat. If your husband pays the zakat on your behalf with your permission and consultation, there is no issue in that. Similarly, if your father, brother, or any other person pays the zakat on your behalf with your permission, it is also permissible.
As for your nephew, if he is planning to get married but is unable to bear the costs, it is permissible to give him zakat to help cover these expenses.
And Allah knows best.
