❀ Virtue of Patience at the Initial Shock of Calamity and Sunnah Supplications ❀
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
True patience (ṣabr) is demonstrated not after time has healed the wound, but right at the moment of the first shock, when the grief is raw and intense.
Narrated from Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"True patience is only at the first stroke of calamity."

When struck by a calamity, the afflicted person should recite the following duʿās, as taught in the Qur’an and Hadith:
﴿إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ﴾
“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return.”
Reference: Sūrah al-Baqarah: 156
This is the primary Qur'anic response to any loss or disaster and reflects the believer's submission to Allah’s decree.
“O Allah! Reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better.”

This supplication was taught by the Prophet ﷺ to those who experience loss, and was practiced by Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها, who was granted a better replacement when she married the Prophet ﷺ after making this duʿā.
True patience is measured by the ability to remain composed and submissive at the first moment of calamity.
The reward of patience is immense when it is coupled with remembrance and reliance on Allah.
Believers are encouraged to recite the Qur’anic formula and Prophetic duʿā to seek reward and relief from Allah ﷻ.
