Passing in Front of a Worshipper During Congestion in Prayer Areas

By: Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai (رحمه الله)

❖ Question

In many mosques, especially during Ramadan, the congregation becomes so large that after the main hall and courtyard fill up, people begin offering prayers on the stairs or pathways leading to the upper level. In such cases, if someone arrives later and needs to reach the upper floor for joining the congregation, they must pass in front of those praying.
What should be done in this situation?
Should one miss the congregation or pass in front of the praying individuals?

Answer

According to the principle of
"Sutrah of the Imam is the Sutrah for the follower (سترة الإمام سترة المصلي)",
if the Imam is leading the prayer, then it is permissible to pass in front of others behind him. However, if the Imam is not praying, then it is not permissible to pass in front of a praying individual.

The preferable solution in such a scenario is to form rows near the entrance or outside the prayer area, so as to avoid passing in front of those offering Salah.
