Question:
Did the school of Ahl al-Sunnah begin with Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله?
Answer:
To claim that the madhhab of Ahl al-Sunnah began with Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله is baseless. The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah began in the era of the Companions رضي الله عنهم.
❀ Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله (728H) said:
مذهب أهل السنة والجماعة مذهب قديم معروف قبل أن يخلق الله أبا حنيفة ومالكا والشافعي وأحمد، فإنه مذهب الصحابة الذين تلقوه عن نبيهم، ومن خالف ذلك كان مبتدعا عند أهل السنة والجماعة.
“The madhhab of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamāʿah is an ancient, well-known madhhab that existed before Allah created Abū Ḥanīfah, Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad. It is the madhhab of the Companions who took it from their Prophet ﷺ. Whoever opposes it is an innovator in the sight of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamāʿah.”
