Hadith:
Narrated by ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAbbas رضي الله عنهما, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not attend the mosque, then his prayer is not accepted unless he has a valid excuse."
— Reported by Ibn Mājah
➊ Listening to the Adhan is Sunnah, and it is essential to respond to it with the prescribed phrases, followed by supplications and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
➋ The Adhan is a grand symbol of Islam, carrying reward for both the caller and the listener. It should be called aloud to reach as many people as possible, encouraging them to attend the prayer in congregation. The muezzin should ideally possess a loud and pleasant voice.
➌ The Adhan signals the start of the prayer time, and it becomes obligatory for those who hear it to proceed to the mosque promptly, aiming to join the congregation from the beginning, especially to catch the Takbir al-Ula (first takbir of the imam).
➍ If a person has a valid Shar'i excuse, such as illness or severe weather, then he is excused from attending the mosque, and no blame lies upon him.
➎ This hadith emphasizes the immense importance of congregational prayer. Regular participation in congregation is a hallmark of true devotion and obedience in Islam.
This teaching reinforces the Islamic principle that communal worship holds a higher rank and that heedlessness toward it, especially without a valid reason, affects the validity and reward of one's prayer.
