Scholarly Opinions
- Majority View (Ahmad, al-Shāfi‘ī, Mālik): One ṭawāf and one sa‘y is sufficient for a qārin.
- Abū Ḥanīfah: Two ṭawāfs and two sa‘ys are required.
- Ibn Ḥazm: Nothing authentic supports the Ḥanafī position; authentic narrations support the majority.
- Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān & Mubārakpūrī: Preferred the majority opinion.
Conditions During Ṭawāf
1. Wudu
Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah رضي الله عنها narrates:
"The Prophet ﷺ performed wudu and then performed ṭawāf."
(Bukhari: 1641, 1642; Muslim: 1235; Ibn Khuzaymah: 2699)
- Majority (Ahmad, Mālik, Shāfi‘ī): Wudu is a condition for ṭawāf, citing the hadith:
الطواف حول البيت مثل الصلاة
"Ṭawāf around the Ka‘bah is like prayer."
(Sahih: Sahih Tirmidhi: 767; Irwā’ al-Ghalīl: 121; Mishkāt: 2576) - Abū Ḥanīfah, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān: Wudu is not a condition; the Prophet’s action alone does not establish obligation.
2. Covering the ‘Awrah
Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه announced:
ولا يطوف بالبيت عريانا
"No one shall perform ṭawāf around the House naked."
(Bukhari: 4656; Muslim: 1347)
- Majority: Covering the ‘awrah is a condition for the validity of ṭawāf.
- Ḥanafīs: Not a condition.
