Musayyib ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who participated in the Battle of Qādisiyyah, reports:
I once visited Ḥudhayfah (رضي الله عنه), and he began narrating to me the battles (ghazawāt) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said:
When ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) was preparing to launch the assault on the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him:
“O ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه), may my father be sacrificed for you. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, with you is that noble being who shall never let you be disgraced. To your right is Jibrāʾīl (عليه السلام), in his hand is a sword that, if struck upon mountains, would split them to pieces.”
“O ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه), rejoice with glad tidings of Riḍwān and Paradise. O ʿAlī, you are the chief of the Arabs, and I am the chief of the children of Ādam.”
— [Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl, 6/430; Also mentioned by al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar in Lisān al-Mīzān al-Mughnī, 95912]
This narration is quite lengthy, but sadly, Imām al-Dhahabī only mentioned the beginning portion of it.
Imām al-Bukhārī (رحمه الله) commented on the narration of Musayyib, stating that it is munkar (unacceptable or rejected).
