❖ The Question
We perform Jumuʿah prayer in our office, which is located in the city. Is our Jumuʿah prayer valid?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
According to the majority of scholars from the Ḥanafī, Shāfiʿī, and Ḥanbalī schools, Jumuʿah prayer can be performed outside of a mosque as well, because there is no Sharʿī evidence prohibiting it.
Allah ﷻ has declared the entire earth a place of prayer for the Ummah of Muḥammad ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
وَجُعِلَتْ لِيَ الْأَرْضُ طَيِّبَةً طَهُورًا وَمَسْجِدًا
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ḥadīth no. 521)
Translation: “The whole earth has been made pure and a mosque for me.”
Similarly, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه wrote in a letter to the people of Bahrain:
أَنْ جَمِّعُوا حَيْثُ كُنْتُمْ
(Narrated by Aḥmad; authenticated by al-Albānī in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl, 3/66, who said its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ upon the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim)
Translation: “Offer Jumuʿah wherever you are.”
❖ Conclusion
In light of these evidences, performing Jumuʿah prayer in an office is valid, provided that there is no nearby mosque where Jumuʿah is being established.
