Offering Obligatory Prayer at Home Without a Valid Excuse

Authored by: Sheikh Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani (Hafizahullah)

Question:

Can a person perform obligatory prayers at home without a valid Islamic excuse?

Answer:

It is compulsory (wajib) for a healthy and non-excused person to perform obligatory prayers in congregation (jama’ah). Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) commands in the Quran:

"And bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience]."
[Surah Al-Baqarah: 43]

The word "bow" here is a command (امر), which signifies obligation in this context.

Evidence from the Sunnah:

  1. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"Whoever hears the call to prayer (adhan) and does not come to the mosque, their prayer is not accepted unless they have a valid excuse."
    [Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Masajid wal-Jama’at, #793]
  2. Incident of a Blind Companion:
A blind man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said:

"I do not have someone to guide me to the mosque. Can I pray at home?"
The Prophet (ﷺ) initially allowed it, but as the man was leaving, he asked:
    "Do you hear the adhan?"
    The man replied, "Yes."
    The Prophet (ﷺ) then said:
"Then you must respond to it."
    [Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Masajid, #653]

This Hadith demonstrates that even a blind man, who faced significant difficulty, was not excused from attending congregational prayer upon hearing the adhan.
  3. Severe Warning Against Missing Congregational Prayer:
    The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"I considered ordering that firewood be gathered, then having the adhan called, and appointing someone to lead the prayer. Then, I would go to those who did not attend the congregational prayer and burn their houses down on them."
    [Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Adhan]

This stern warning emphasizes the obligation of attending congregational prayer for those capable of doing so without a valid excuse.

Contemporary Situation:

Unfortunately, many people today neglect the importance of congregational prayer, remaining busy with their worldly affairs even after hearing the adhan. Some pray at home or their workplaces, considering it sufficient, despite the explicit warnings in the Quran and Hadith.

Key Points:

  1. Congregational prayer is obligatory for all capable men without a valid excuse.
  2. Excuses such as illness, severe weather, or physical incapacity are valid reasons for missing congregational prayer.
  3. Praying at home without a valid excuse is not accepted as per the Hadith.

Conclusion:

Performing obligatory prayers at home without a valid Islamic excuse is impermissible and renders the prayer invalid according to the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ). A healthy individual must heed the adhan and join the congregational prayer in the mosque.
