1. Ḥajj al-Tamattuʿ
- To enter Makkah during the months of Hajj in the state of Ihram for ʿUmrah.
- After performing ʿUmrah, exit Ihram and remain in the state of non-Ihram until the days of Hajj.
- Sacrifice is obligatory in this type of Hajj.
2. Ḥajj al-Qirān
- To assume Ihram for both ʿUmrah and Hajj from the Miqāt.
- Upon reaching Makkah, perform ʿUmrah but do not shave or cut hair and do not exit Ihram.
- Remain in Ihram until completing Hajj during its days.
- Sacrifice is obligatory; if unable, fast for ten days.
- Bringing the sacrificial animal along is recommended, as it is the Sunnah method.
- Involves three Ṭawāf (ʿUmrah, Hajj, and Wādāʿ) and two Saʿy (ʿUmrah and Hajj).
3. Ifrād
- Ḥajj al-Ifrād: Assuming Ihram from the Miqāt for Hajj only and performing all rites of Hajj.
- ʿUmrah Mufradah: Assuming Ihram from the Miqāt for ʿUmrah only and completing all its rites.
- No sacrifice is obligatory in either of these.
Since all actions depend on intentions, it is obligatory to make a distinct intention for each type.
Evidence
Narrated from ʿĀʾishah (RA):
"We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage. Among us were those who entered Ihram for ʿUmrah, some for both Hajj and ʿUmrah, and some for Hajj only. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ assumed Ihram for Hajj only (but from other evidence, he was a Qārin). Those who had assumed Ihram for ʿUmrah exited Ihram, and those who had assumed Ihram for Hajj or for both Hajj and ʿUmrah did not exit Ihram until the day of sacrifice."
