Is Wudu Necessary After the Discharge of Madhy?

❖ Question
Is it necessary to perform wudu after the discharge of madhy (pre-seminal fluid)?
❖ Answer
Madhy is impure, and upon its discharge, both istinja (washing the private parts) and wudu are necessary.
❀ Sayyiduna ʿAli ibn Abi Talib (RA) said:
كنت رجلا مذاء...
“I used to have frequent discharge of madhy. Since the Prophet’s ﷺ daughter was my wife, I asked a man (al-Miqdad RA) to inquire from the Prophet ﷺ. He asked, and the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Perform wudu and wash your private part.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 269; Sahih Muslim: 303)
❀ Sayyiduna Sahl ibn Hunayf (RA) said:
“I used to suffer greatly from madhy and would often perform ghusl due to it. I asked the Prophet ﷺ about it, and he said: ‘Wudu is sufficient for you.’”
(Sunan Abi Dawud: 210; Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 115; Sunan Ibn Majah: 506 – sanad hasan)
Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan sahih, Imam Ibn Khuzaymah (291) and Imam Ibn Hibban (1103) graded it sahih.
❀ Sayyiduna ʿAbdullah ibn Saʿd (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
أما الماء بعد الماء فهو المذي...
“The fluid that comes before semen is madhy. Every young man experiences madhy. When it occurs, wash your private part and testicles, and perform wudu as you do for prayer.”
(Musnad Ahmad, 4/342; Sunan Abi Dawud: 211; Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 133; Sunan Ibn Majah: 651 – sanad hasan)
Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan gharib, Imam Ibn al-Jarud (7) graded it sahih.
❀ Hafiz Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (رحمه الله, 463H) said:
هو موضع إجماع لا خلاف بين المسلمين فى إيجاب الوضوء منه وإيجاب غسله لنجاسته.
“There is consensus on this matter. The Muslims have no difference that wudu is obligatory after the discharge of madhy, and washing it is also obligatory, since it is impure.”
(Al-Tamhid, 21/207)
He also said:
إجماعهم على أن المذي والودي فيهما الوضوء.
“The scholars are unanimous that both madhy and wady necessitate wudu.”
(Al-Istidhkar, 1/157)
