Obligation of Ghusl (ritual bath) after Intercourse

Fatwa by: Sheikh Ibn Jibreen (may Allah preserve him)

Question:

If during intercourse, penetration occurs but there is no ejaculation into the womb, is Ghusl (ritual bath) still obligatory for the wife in this case? Additionally, if a contraceptive device is placed in the woman’s womb, does she still need to perform Ghusl, or would washing the body and limbs suffice?

Answer:

Yes! Ghusl becomes obligatory merely due to penetration, even if it is minimal. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“When one of you sits between her four limbs and exerts himself, then Ghusl becomes obligatory, even if there is no ejaculation.”
[Muttafaqun Alayh (Agreed upon)]

In another Hadith, it is mentioned:

“When the circumcised parts meet, Ghusl becomes obligatory.”

[Narrated by Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad]

Even if a contraceptive device is placed in the womb, Ghusl will still be obligatory, as penetration and ejaculation typically occur in this case. Wudu (ablution) will only suffice if there is mere physical contact without penetration.
