Obligation of a Mahram for Women Performing Hajj

Condition of Having a Mahram for a Woman’s Obligation of Hajj

The presence of a Mahram is a condition for the obligation of Hajj upon a woman, as mentioned by Shaykh Wahbah al-Zuhayli (رحمه الله).

Narration of ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما)
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:


لا تسافر المرأة ثلثة أيام إلا مع ذي محرم
“A woman must not travel for three days except with a Mahram relative.”
[Bukhari: 1086, Kitab Taqsir al-Salat: Bab fi Kam Yuqasir al-Salat; Muslim: 1338; Abu Dawud: 1727]


Narration of Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“It is not permissible for any woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day…


أن تسافر مسيرة يوم وليلة ليس معها حرمة
…to travel for a day and night without a Mahram relative.”
[Bukhari: 1088; Muslim: 1339; Abu Dawud: 1724; Tirmidhi: 1170]


An Incident
A man said: “My wife has set out for Hajj, and my name has been registered for such-and-such expedition.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said:


انطلق فحج مع امرأتك
“Go and perform Hajj with your wife.”
[Muslim: 1341, Kitab al-Hajj: Bab Safar al-Mar’ah maʿa Mahram ila Hajj wa Ghayrih]
