Ruling and Legal Status of Imam's Mistake Due to a Worshipper’s Invalid Ablution
If one of the worshippers does not perform ablution correctly and the Imam makes a mistake during the prayer, what is the ruling in such a situation? Is there any authentic or weak narration or Athar regarding this matter?
This matter is established through Ahadith that if a worshipper does not perform proper ablution (wudhu), it can even affect the Imam's recitation. The following Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ explains this issue:
A Companion of the Prophet ﷺ narrated that the Prophet ﷺ led the Fajr prayer, during which he recited Surah Ar-Rum, but he experienced doubt in the recitation. After completing the prayer, he said:
❝What is the matter with people who pray with us and do not perform ablution properly? These are the ones who cause us to doubt in our recitation.❞
[Sunan an-Nasa’i: 948]
This Hadith indicates that negligence in purification and ablution can disrupt the prayer.
If the followers are negligent in their ablution, it can affect the Imam’s prayer, as is evident from the statement of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the importance of proper ablution and purification to ensure humility and concentration in prayer.
If worshippers are negligent in performing ablution, it can even impact the Imam, as proven by this Hadith.
This narration is authentically reported in Sunan an-Nasa’i with a sound chain of transmission, and it clearly demonstrates that deficiencies in purification can affect the Imam’s recitation as well.
Hence, every worshipper must take special care in performing ablution and maintaining purification so that the prayer remains valid and undisturbed.
✿ Negligence in ablution and purification can create difficulties for the Imam, therefore it is obligatory for all worshippers to ensure their wudhu and taharah are complete and proper.
