❀ Question

What is the ruling on Mutʿah (temporary marriage) according to the Qur’ān and Ḥadīth? Is it permissible?

❀ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

In the beginning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted temporary permission for mutʿah in specific circumstances. However, later he ﷺ prohibited it forever. This ruling is explicitly proven from authentic aḥādīth.

◈ Evidence of Prohibition from Ḥadīth

In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, a sound narration states:

(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Vol. 1, p. 452, Kitāb al-Nikāḥ, Bāb Nikāḥ al-Mutʿah)

Translation:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade mutʿah and said:
"Behold! From this day until the Day of Resurrection it is forbidden.”

❀ Conclusion

✿ Initially, due to necessity, the Prophet ﷺ permitted mutʿah temporarily.
✿ Later, he permanently prohibited it and declared it harām until the Day of Judgment.
✿ This ḥadīth establishes that mutʿah is no longer permissible in any circumstance.
