Monotheism in Judgment and Polytheism in Judgment in the Light of the Quran and Hadith

This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Irshad Ullah Maan's book The Search for Truth.

Tawheed Fil Hukm and Shirk Fil Hukm

Tawheed Fil Hukm means that in matters of religion, no one's command is to be followed except Allah's, and since the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is also the command of Allah.
Reference: (An-Nisa:80)
Therefore, in religion, obedience is commanded only to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. It is also commanded to follow the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the path of the believers, meaning to become Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah.
Reference: (An-Nisa:115)
And in the same verse, the consequence of deviating from this path is described clearly:

And whoever opposes the Messenger (ﷺ) after the right path has become clear to him and follows a way other than that of the believers, We will turn him to what he has turned to, and We will put him in Hell, and evil is the destination.
Reference: (An-Nisa:115)

[Inil Hukmu Illallah]

There is no command except for Allah.
Reference: (Al-An'am:57), (Yusuf:40)

Remember! He is the Creator and His command is the only command.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:54)

The command belongs to Him alone.
Reference: (Al-An'am:62)

Follow what your Lord has commanded you.
Reference: (Al-An'am:106)

Then hold firmly to that which has been revealed to you; indeed, you are on a straight path.

The Command to Obey Allah and His Messenger ﷺ:

[Say! If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.] Say, obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). But if they turn away, then Allah does not love the disbelievers.
Reference: (Aal Imran: 32,31)

① Allah has mercy on those who obey Him and His Messenger (ﷺ). Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys will enter Hell. Those who obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) are those who believe in Allah and the Day of Judgment; those who do not obey are hypocrites. He is not a believer who does not accept the decision of the Messenger (ﷺ) wholeheartedly. Those who obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) will be with the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous.
Reference: (An-Nisa: 66 to 69)

② Whoever obeys the Messenger (ﷺ) has obeyed Allah.
Reference: (An-Nisa:80)

③ Whoever abandons the path of the Messenger (ﷺ) and the noble companions is destined for Hell.
Reference: (An-Nisa:115)

④ Follow the Quran and Sunnah, and if you do not, then only the responsibility will reach the Messenger ﷺ.
Reference: (Al-Ma'idah:92)

⑤ Those who follow the Messenger ﷺ are the ones who will attain success.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:158,157)

⑥ After the decision of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, a believer has no choice in the matter, and whoever disobeys has clearly gone astray.
Reference: (Al-Ahzab:36)

⑦ Believers should obey Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and not nullify their deeds.
Reference: (Muhammad:33)

In the Quran, the command to obey Allah and His Messenger ﷺ is given in at least 31 places.

Reference: (Aal Imran:132,32,31), (Al-Anfal:32), (An-Nisa:13,14,56,64,65,66,67,68,69,70,80,115), (Al-Ma'idah:92), (Al-A'raf:158,157), (Al-Anfal:1,13,20,21,24,46), (At-Tawbah:63), (An-Nur:52,54,56,63), (Al-Ahzab:21,36,71), (Muhammad:33), (Al-Fath:17), (Al-Hujurat:14), (Al-Mujadila:13), (Al-Hashr:7), (At-Taghabun:12), (Al-Jinn:23)

The hadith from Sahih Bukhari is very important in this regard, in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: All the people of my Ummah will enter Paradise except those who themselves refuse to enter Paradise. It was asked: "Who refuses?" He said: "Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me has refused."

Reference: Bukhari, Kitab al-I'tisam bil-Kitab wa al-Sunnah, Bab al-Iqtida li Sunan Rasul Allah ﷺ:7280

The Imamate of the Imams is indeed rightful

But only the person of Mustafa ﷺ is worthy of obedience

When Allah Almighty sent Adam (peace be upon him) down to the earth, He said: My guidance will come to you from Me, so follow My guidance; those who follow My guidance will neither fear nor grieve.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:38)
That is, they will be the friends (awliya).
Reference: (Yunus:62 to 64)
Because in both places it is stated [لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ] that neither fear nor grief will be upon them (meaning) whoever follows Allah’s guidance will have neither fear nor grief, and Allah’s friend will also have neither fear nor grief, meaning the one who follows Allah’s guidance is Allah’s friend. But whoever turns away from Allah’s guidance will be raised blind on the Day of Resurrection.
Reference: (Taha:123 to 126)
Every prophet commanded his nation to worship Allah, fear Allah, and obey me.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:59, 65, 70, 73, 85)

And the command was given to the nation of Muhammad ﷺ: O people! Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord (the Quran and Hadith) and do not follow other friends besides Him; you take very little advice.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:3)

And He said: Nor does he speak from desire. It is not but a revelation revealed, taught to him by one intense in strength (Gabriel).
Reference: (An-Najm:3-5)
And He said: Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you.
Reference: (Al-Ma'idah:3)
The completion of the religion means that all its pillars, obligations, Sunnahs, limits, rulings, disbelief, and polytheism have been explained. From the above three verses, it is clear that whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conveyed about the religion, whether it is the Quran or Hadith, it is according to revelation.

The religion has been completed in the Quran and Hadith:

We have been commanded to follow the revealed religion (Quran and Hadith) and to obey no one else besides it.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:3)

If anyone follows others besides the divine guidance (Quran and Hadith), there is no protector for him from Allah.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:120), (Ar-Ra'd:37)

If anyone follows others besides the divine guidance, he is unjust.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:145)

Those who do not rule according to the religion revealed by Allah are disbelievers, oppressors, and disobedient.
Reference: (Al-Ma'idah:44, 47, 45 to 50)

Follow the revelation that has come from your Lord.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:3)

The guidance sent down from Allah is the true guidance; all else is misguidance.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah: 38, 39, 137, 285)

Those who follow the heavenly guidance will have neither fear nor grief.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:39, 38)

Heavenly guidance is the true guidance.
Reference: (Aal Imran:73), (Al-An'am:71)

Through heavenly guidance, Allah wants to lead you on the path of the righteous people who came before.
Reference: (An-Nisa:26)

But alas, the majority of the Muslim Ummah, despite the clear commands to act upon the Quran and Hadith, committed shirk by ruling and followed the first nations in this regard and held beliefs that have no existence in the Quran and Hadith. This is the reason why today the Muslim Ummah is divided into many sects, and whoever among them has turned away from obeying Allah and His Messenger ﷺ has committed shirk by ruling, because they obeyed others instead of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

Do not seek judgment from anyone other than Allah; most of the people of the earth will mislead you.
Reference: (Al-An'am:114 to 116)

The People of the Book (Jews and Christians) made the clerics and dervishes their lords, meaning they committed shirk by ruling. It is said:

Those people have taken their clerics and dervishes (scholars and elders) as lords besides Allah.
Reference: (At-Tawbah:31)

Have these people appointed partners with Allah who have prescribed such religious laws that Allah has not ordained?
Reference: (Ash-Shura:21)

(Contrary to Allah's command) if you obey anyone, then you have certainly become a polytheist.
Reference: (Al-An'am:121)

[What is wrong with you, what kind of judgment do you pass?] [Do you have any (heavenly) book in which you read?]
Reference: (Al-Qalam:37,36)

Remember that Allah has given countless blessings to mankind; if a person starts counting Allah's blessings, he cannot count them all.
Reference: (for example An-Nahl:18, 53 to 55), (Ibrahim:34), (Luqman:20)
But the greatest blessing of Allah is the heavenly guidance which is complete in the Quran and Hadith.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:3), (An-Najm:3 to 5), (Al-Ma'idah:7,3)

However, the majority of the Muslim Ummah, like the previous nations, mixed falsehood with the truth in the Quran and Hadith, and thus divided into many sects and confused the heavenly guidance, i.e., the blessing, mixing it up and altering it, just as the previous nations did.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:211,42)
Although they were forbidden from adopting the way of the previous nations.
Reference: (Al-Hadid:16), (Al-Baqarah:145,120)

Divine guidance is a blessing; altering divine guidance is a crime, and there is severe punishment for those who do so.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:211)

Do not mix falsehood with the truth, while you know it.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:42)
That is, nothing else should be mixed with the Quran and Hadith.

Allah Almighty has forbidden Muslims from adopting the attitude of the People of the Book.
Reference: (Al-Hadid:16)

The most horrific tragedy in human history:

Human history shows, as the Quran also tells us, that when Allah sent Adam (peace be upon him) to the world, He commanded him to follow the divine guidance, and those who do not follow the divine guidance will go to Hell.
Reference: (Taha:123 to 126)
After the departure of Adam (peace be upon him) from this world, a long time passed, and during the time of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him), the majority of people were polytheists because they had turned away from the divine guidance (blessing).
Reference: (Noah:1 to 28)
Then Allah flooded the entire world; only the children who were believers survived, and the world was repopulated from the descendants of those believers. Then, during the time of Abraham (peace be upon him), the majority of people were again polytheists, as they had once more turned away from the divine guidance (blessing). Abraham (peace be upon him) settled his believing wife and son Ishmael (peace be upon him) in Mecca, and Mecca was populated from their descendants. The Quran tells us that during the time of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the majority of the people of Mecca were polytheists because they had turned away from the divine guidance (blessing). The same happened with the communities of Moses (peace be upon him) and Jesus (peace be upon him). They also turned away from the divine guidance (blessing), mixed it with falsehood, and this is what the majority of the Muslim Ummah is doing at present. They have mixed falsehood, i.e., non-divine guidance, with the divine guidance (blessing) and are continuing to do so because they have become free from the commands of the Quran and authentic Hadith and are following their own desires. Yet every sect claims that they are correct, although how can all sects be correct? Only one group will be correct, and only one group will be successful; this is the decision of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).

Who is the Successful Group?:

At present, among all the sects of Muslims in the world, only Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah will be successful. The definition of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah is those who follow in belief and practice the method adopted by our beloved Prophet ﷺ and the method adopted by the noble Companions, and this religion was completed during the life of our beloved Prophet ﷺ. Whatever was added later will be considered as shirk in ruling. Here are some examples.
Reference: (Also see: pages 622, 623)

① Allah Almighty has strictly forbidden calling upon anyone other than Allah in the Holy Quran, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also forbade it: and the noble companions, may Allah be pleased with them, strictly adhered to this, but some who recite the Kalima, indeed many who recite the Kalima, now call upon others besides Allah. Their belief certainly falls under shirk in judgment because they did not obey the command of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ in this matter but obeyed their scholars and spiritual leaders. Allah Almighty said in the Quran regarding the People of the Book in such a situation:

[اِتَّخَذُوۡۤا اَحۡبَارَہُمۡ وَ رُہۡبَانَہُمۡ اَرۡبَابًا مِّنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰہِ]

Those people have taken their scholars and monks (scholars and spiritual leaders) besides Allah as lords.
Reference: (At-Tawbah:31)

② Allah Almighty made all humans the descendants of Adam, peace be upon him, and said that Adam was a human and created from clay, and all the Prophets, peace be upon them, including our beloved Prophet ﷺ, are humans. These facts have been mentioned many times in the Holy Quran, and the Messenger ﷺ also said: I am only a human, and he said I am the leader of all humans on the Day of Resurrection.

Reference: Bukhari, Book of Tafsir, Chapter: The offspring of those We carried with Noah, indeed he was a grateful servant:4712], [Muslim, Book of Virtues, Chapter: The obligation to comply with what is legislated... etc.:2362], [and Book of Faith, Chapter: The lowest rank of the people of Paradise:194

And Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger (ﷺ) is a human being.
Reference: (Ibn Hibban:5675)
This is a matter agreed upon by the Quran and authentic Hadith, but today some who profess the Kalima deny this fact. Their belief falls under shirk in judgment because these people did not obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) but obeyed their scholars and ascetics, and this is exactly what the People of the Book did
Reference: (At-Tawbah:31)
and Allah Almighty declared them polytheists. It should be noted that unconditional obedience to scholars is forbidden. If it is according to the Quran and authentic Hadith, then it is permissible; otherwise, it is forbidden.

Similarly, some people have given names to certain elders such as Data, Mushkil Kusha, Dastgir, Gharib Nawaz, Ghaus-ul-Azam, some have called them Ganj Bakhsh, the one who saves from storms, the one who turns bad luck into good luck, etc., on their own accord. Allah Almighty has not revealed any evidence for these, and these beliefs are later inventions and fall under the category of shirk by ruling
Reference: (An-Najm:23)
as has been explained earlier. It should be noted that Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, may Allah have mercy on him, was born in 500 AH in Baghdad, and Ali Hujwiri, may Allah have mercy on him, died in 465 AH, and there is no mention of them in the completed religion of Islam. All beliefs about them are self-made. Besides this, there are countless other things that were later included in beliefs, which will be mentioned in their respective places.

It is clearly written in the Quran, authentic Hadith, and the reliable books of Hanafi jurisprudence that the religion of Islam has been completed in the Quran and Hadith. If today all Muslims agree that the religion of Islam has been completed in the Quran and Hadith and that all other beliefs are false, then all differences can end and they can become one Muslim Ummah, and all who say the Kalima can act upon Tawhid in practice and avoid shirk in practice. In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty has repeatedly condemned sects and explained that sectarianism is due to stubbornness and neglect of divine guidance, and He told the Prophet ﷺ that you have no relation with the sectarians. Allah Almighty says:

And do not be like those who became sects and differed after clear proofs had come to them. For them is a great punishment.
Reference: (Al-Imran:105)

He also said:

Indeed, those who have divided the religion into sects and formed different groups among themselves, you have no relation with them; their matter is with Allah, then He will inform them of what they used to do (i.e., He will punish them).
Reference: (Al-An'am:159)

And He said:

You people, hold firmly to the religion and do not divide into sects.
Reference: (Ash-Shura:13)

In these verses, every kind of sectarianism and grouping is forbidden and blameworthy when it separates principles, causes brotherhood and love to vanish, and establishes enmity and hatred among one another. Restricting these verses specifically to the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) is a distortion because the attribute that was bad for the Jews and Christians will also be bad if found among those who claim Islam. The purpose of informing about the conditions of the People of the Book and other nations is actually to command avoidance of their bad traits and habits, because the purpose of the Quran's revelation is not merely to narrate the history of nations and individuals but to derive lessons and admonitions from historical events.

Allah Almighty has repeatedly stated in the Holy Quran that He will decide the disputes on the Day of Judgment. It is evident that when Allah Almighty will decide the current disputes of the Muslim Ummah on the Day of Judgment, the decision will be in favor of those who have followed the divine guidance, and against those who have formed sects, acted stubbornly, followed their scholars and elders instead of divine guidance, and followed the ways of their ancestors instead of divine guidance, which has been repeatedly prohibited in the Quran:

And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "We will follow that upon which we found our fathers." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:170)

This is based on guesswork, and that is why following guesswork has been prohibited. All such people have committed shirk by ruling because they have no evidence, and all of them are in danger:

[ قُلۡ اِنَّ ہُدَی اللّٰہِ ہُوَ الۡہُدٰی ؕ وَ لَئِنِ اتَّبَعۡتَ اَہۡوَآءَہُمۡ بَعۡدَ الَّذِیۡ جَآءَکَ مِنَ الۡعِلۡمِ ۙ مَا لَکَ مِنَ اللّٰہِ مِنۡ وَّلِیٍّ وَّ لَا نَصِیۡرٍ]

Indeed, the guidance is the guidance of Allah. And if you were to follow their desires after knowledge has come to you, then there is no guardian or helper for you against Allah.
Reference: (Al-Baqarah:120)

Because they have lied against Allah Almighty, and those who lie against Allah will be guilty on the Day of Judgment because they have made part of the religion things which Allah and His Messenger ﷺ did not make part of the religion, and this is lying against Allah.
Reference: (An-Nisa: 50), (As-Saff: 7)
They have changed the favor of Allah, that is, they have altered the divine guidance. They have given the status of Creator to the creation because the right to legislate religion belongs to the Creator, not the creation, and this is shirk by ruling.
Reference: (Al-A'raf: 54), (Ash-Shura: 21)
Because no one's word is truer than Allah's words (Quran and Hadith).
Reference: (An-Nisa: 87)
Allah's words are the truth that erase falsehood.
Reference: (Al-Anbiya: 18)
Allah's words clarify the paths of the believers and the criminals.
Reference: (Al-An'am: 55)
And there is no contradiction in Allah's words.
Reference: (An-Nisa: 82)
Whatever the Messenger ﷺ conveyed about the religion (i.e., Quran and Hadith) was not conveyed without revelation, and the religion is complete, and this is a favor from Allah. On the Day of Judgment, no religion other than Islam will be accepted.
Reference: (Aal Imran: 85)
Any action not according to the Sunnah is rejected by Allah Almighty, and the innovator has no connection with the Muslim Ummah.

Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever does a deed in religion that has no basis in the Shariah, then that deed is rejected.

Reference: Bukhari, Book of Testimonies, Chapter: If they agree on an unjust peace, the peace is rejected: [2698], [Muslim, Book of Judgments, Chapter: Annulment of false rulings and rejection of newly invented matters: 1718]

In another narration it is said:

((من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد ))

Whoever does a deed for which we have no command, then it is rejected.
Reference: Bukhari, Commentary, Book of Sales, Chapter: Al-Najsh, above the hadith: 2142], [Muslim, Book of Judgments, Chapter: Annulment of false rulings and rejection of newly invented matters: 18/1718]

Meaning it is vain and rejected, one should avoid it and not act upon it. These three hadiths (the reference of the third hadith is coming ahead) encompass all innovations and new things that people have introduced into the religion, and the second hadith is even clearer than the first. These three hadiths have completely broken the entire structure of the innovators and destroyed their foundation because the new deeds they brought into the religion are all rejected by these hadiths.

The third hadith mentioned is as follows:

It is related about Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'oon رضي الله عنهم that they came to the houses of the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and inquired about his worship. When they were informed, they considered that worship to be little, saying, "Where are we! Where is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! We are sinners." One said, "I will pray all night throughout my life," another said, "I will always keep fasting," and the third said, "I will stay away from women all my life." At that moment, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and said: "I fast and I break my fast, I pray at night and I sleep, and I marry women. Whoever dislikes my way is not from me."

Reference: Bukhari, Book of Marriage, Chapter on Encouragement to Marriage: 5063

Remember that just as the person of the Prophet ﷺ is superior and exalted above all elders and Imams, similarly his teaching, Sunnah, and way are superior and exalted above all ways on earth, and the words of the Prophet are superior to all words.

Summary of the Discussion on Tawheed Fil Hukm:

The summary of the discussion in this chapter, that is Tawheed Fil Hukm and Shirk Fil Hukm, is that every Kalimah reciter should hold their belief according to the established tenets of the religion, and any belief not proven by the religion will become a source of torment for that Kalimah reciter on the Day of Judgment, and they will be questioned about their self-invented beliefs. For example, who told you that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is your problem solver, hold these beliefs about the people of Baghdad, the one from Lahore is your benefactor, and to follow a certain Imam abandoning the way of Muhammad ﷺ, and to perform un-Islamic acts at graves.

Reference: The same is written in Tafseer Muradabadi (Al-An'am:56, Benefit:124)
meaning your method is following the self and desire, not following evidence, therefore it is not worthy of adoption.
Reference: (Al-An'am:121, p:242)
Because abandoning the divine command in religion and accepting the command of another besides Allah is associating partners with Allah.
Reference: (Al-A'raf:12, p:17)
When the text exists, making an analogy against the text is certainly rejected.

And it is written that only Allah's guidance is guidance
Reference: (2/120, p:219)
under which it is written that only that is worthy of following and every other path is falsehood and misguidance. For more see the same
