Misunderstanding Jibrīl’s Role in Birth of ʿĪsā

❖ Barelvi Argument: Misunderstood Authority of Jibrīl

Hafiz Hafeezur Rahman Qadri narrates:

"Once, a boy who used to study with me met me after a long time. I asked him why we hadn’t met for so long. He replied, 'Hafiz Sahib, the truth is, I believe you commit shirk, and that’s why I’ve been avoiding you.' I was surprised and asked, 'Brother, shirk is a grave injustice—tell me where I commit shirk?' He replied, 'You go to shrines and say:

"Give me a son, O saint!"

This, he argued, is a quality of Allah ﷻ alone, yet you ask it from creation. Therefore, it's shirk.

I took his hand and led him to the mosque, opening the Qur'an to Surah Maryam, verse 19. In this incident, Jibrīl عليه السلام came to Maryam عليها السلام in human form. Seeing him, she said,

“Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.”

“He said, 'I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.’”
[Surah Maryam: 19]

From this verse, it is “evident” that Jibrīl عليه السلام granted the child. Hence, if he can give a child, what must be the rank of other beloved servants of Allah?”

❖ First Response: The Qur’an Clearly Attributes Creation to Allah Alone

Those who seek to create loopholes to justify shirk use such flimsy arguments. If Qadri Sahib had truly reflected on the Qur’an, he wouldn’t make such an ignorant claim, trying to shift the power of creation from the Creator to His creation.

It is clearly evident that the child was given by the Lord (Allah), not Jibrīl عليه السلام. Upon hearing the news, Maryam عليها السلام said:

“She said, ‘How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?’”
[Surah Maryam: 20]

“He said, ‘So it will be; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me.’”
[Surah Maryam: 21]

☛ Had Jibrīl عليه السلام been the giver of the child, he would not have said: “Your Lord says...”. Rather, he would have said: “It is easy for me.”
☛ The power to give a child is not in the hands of any creation—it belongs solely to Allah ﷻ, the Creator of the entire universe.

❖ Second Response: Qur’anic Verses That Clarify the Matter Further

“She said, ‘My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?’ [The angel] said, ‘So it will be. Allah creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”
[Surah Aali-‘Imran: 47]

And in the preceding verse:

“[And mention] when the angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary—distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah].’”
[Surah Aali-‘Imran: 45]

☛ Allah ﷻ Himself gave the glad tidings. Jibrīl عليه السلام was only the messenger, not the giver.
☛ Even the name ‘ʿĪsā ibn Maryam’ was assigned by Allah ﷻ, not by Jibrīl
☛ Hence, saying Jibrīl عليه السلام gave the child is a grave misattribution—equating the creation to the Creator.

❖ Qur’anic Declaration of Divine Authority Over Offspring

“To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He gives to whom He wills female [children], and He gives to whom He wills male [children]. Or He makes them both male and female, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Competent.”
[Surah ash-Shūrā: 49–50]

☛ O Muslims! Ask your conscience: according to the Qur’an, granting sons and daughters is solely Allah’s right.
☛ So how can Jibrīl عليه السلام be considered the giver? This belief contradicts the Qur’an.
☛ Qadri Sahib’s claim is a grave transgression, attributing divine creation to a creation.

❖ Reality of ʿĪsā عليه السلام’s Birth: A Unique Miracle

This was a one-time divine miracle in human history.
Qadri Sahib's logic leads to the absurd conclusion that any virgin or widow could simply request a child from Jibrīl
Worse, it would suggest that even illegitimate births could be attributed to Jibrīl عليه السلام—this is nothing short of blasphemy.

❖ Even Prophets Never Claimed to Give Children

When the Prophets عليهم السلام desired children, they always supplicated only to Allah ﷻ. For example:

“[Ibrāhīm] said, ‘My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.’”
[Surah aṣ-Ṣāffāt: 100]

“[Zakariyyā] said, ‘My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.’”
[Surah Aali-‘Imran: 38]

And when accepted:

“So We responded to him, and We granted him Yaḥyā.”

☛ If even prophets didn’t claim to give offspring, how can it be claimed for anyone else?

❖ Conclusion: False Belief is Rejected by Qur’an

✔ The belief presented by Qadri Sahib is invalid and rejected due to clear contradiction with the Qur’an.
✔ The true Aqeedah (belief) of Prophets was rooted in Tawḥīd—stronger than mountains.
✔ They knew none besides Allah has the power to give children.
