Question

What is the ruling on using a misbaha (prayer beads) for adhkār after prayer? Is it permissible, or is it better to count on one’s fingers?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

Using a misbaha for counting dhikr is permissible, but the better and more virtuous way is to count on the fingers and their tips.

Evidence:
The Prophet ﷺ said:

«اعْقِدْنَ بِالْأَنَامِلِ فَإِنَّهُنَّ مُسْتَنْطَقَاتٌ»
“Count (the dhikr) on the fingertips, for they will be made to speak (and testify) on the Day of Resurrection.”
(Musnad Aḥmad, 6/371; Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 1501; Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, 3583)

Important Points Regarding the Misbaha

  • Although allowed, the Prophet ﷺ encouraged using fingers because they will testify on the Day of Judgment.
  • There is a potential risk of showing off when holding a misbaha, as some people may use it to appear pious before others.
  • Often, while using a misbaha, the presence of heart (khushūʿ) is lost —
◈ One may be moving the beads mechanically while the mind wanders.
  • For these reasons, the best and more mindful practice is to perform dhikr on one’s fingers.
